Can kindness leave a bruise?

person putting a plaster on a finger

We often associate kindness with making people feel better.
Encourage them. Protect them. Reassure them.
Sometimes that is exactly what kindness requires.
Sometimes kindness is telling someone what they do not want to hear.
A colleague whose work is slipping may need honesty more than encouragement. A friend making the same destructive decision may not need another comforting nod.
Avoiding discomfort can feel kind in the moment.
But if silence allows damage to continue, who exactly are we protecting?
Truth delivered carelessly is cruelty.
Truth withheld carelessly may be too.
Which hurts more?
