How far can you grow before you can't hear?

black rotary phone with the handset off on a long cord

When a business is small, customers are loud.
The founder hears complaints directly. Staff know regular customers by name. Someone notices immediately when something goes wrong.
Then the business grows.
Reports appear.
Departments appear.
Dashboards appear.
Eventually the customer is represented by a number on page 46.
Scale creates efficiency because not everyone can speak to everyone anymore.
But distance has a price.
The larger the organisation becomes, the more deliberate it must be about staying close to reality.
Otherwise, customers keep talking.
You just stop hearing them.
Too far away?
