Who’s pushing you?

Only you. It’s the year end, park some time to reflect.

How will you make it a better year for you and the world?

How it is going to work?

You can blame everyone else and everything else. But the only way it is going to work is for you to take responsibility for your part – whether it is your mistake or not – and get to work.

Who’s gonna do it?

What do you love?

If you are passionate about something, you would learn everything about it. Deeply.

Don’t hang the word passion on your lips but your brain hardly know anything about it more than the average Joe.

If you love it, you will study it in-depth.

Did you study it in-depth?

Are you thinking too much?

Sometimes when it gets tough, thinking too much makes it tougher.

Don’t think. Just do. Maybe that’s how the problem gets solved.

Are you doing too little?

Are you spending?

Everyone wants to do it cheap. No issues with that. Hey, it’s your money. But finding that guy who can do it cheap and yet deliver what you are looking for is going to take a LOT of time. Good luck in finding him.

You know what they say. Time is priceless.

What is the true cost?

It is about time?

Push yourself. Rest yourself. Alternate. When you do that you can be more consistent in whatever you are doing. You give yourself a chance to recover and reflect. That works wonder for the work you are producing.

Have you considered your energy?

What’s it going to be?

Once you have made a decision, the immediate next step is to recognize the price of that decision. Of course, the price comes in the form of time, effort and money. Be ready to pay.

How much do you have?

What are you supposed to do?

If you focus on what you NEED to do rather than whether doing it will make you happy, the world will be an immensely better place.

Where do you place your happiness?

What’s perfect?

No one is perfect. That we can agree. Why would we expect all business decisions to be perfect? Or that every campaign will be perfectly executed for that matter.

You make dumb decisions now and then and hopefully you grow wiser with it. That’s all part of the game.

Who’s perfect?

What are you thinking?

There is thinking, there is worrying, there is mulling. Sometimes we confuse these with actual planning. Learn to throw out the rubbish. You can argue these are all part and parcel of the planning process and you may be right. But be very careful that it is also a waste of time if you discuss too much of something before its time.

What kind of plans do you have?

Does your opinion hold water?

“Prejudice is a great time saver. You can form opinions without having to get the facts.” – E.B. White

Do you have the facts?

What is the weight of your complains?

If you give more compliments than complaints, your world will be a better place immediately. The world will be a better place. Give compliments with the same fervor as you would a complain. Compliments can carry more weight than complaints in improving the way things are done.

What does more really mean?

Higher. Faster. Stronger. It all sounds very good. But higher, faster and stronger doesn’t mean healthier. This doesn’t just apply to the Olympics or sports in general. It also applies to business.

To gain value from the pursuit of your goal there must be an element of balance. Without that balance, your commitment gets pricier. Eventually what is that pursuit worth?

Are you game?

What is right?

I don’t think that digital is wrong. I don’t think that press is wrong.

We need to have the wisdom to know there is a difference.

We need to get beyond this is right and that is wrong.

Our job as marketers and consultants is to understand the underlying principles of each medium and the role it plays in the strategy. As the adage goes, “Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water.”

Mediums are tools. Approaches are tools as well. Learn to use it to build whatever you are building. Whether you subscribe to it or otherwise doesn’t really matter. You job is to learn it. Just because you don’t subscribe to it doesn’t mean it doesn’t work.

What is left?

Do you break things down?

Analysis is just the first step to making sense of the data that you have. The next and more fruitful step is synthesizing the data that you have. The leap from data to the all important decision often lies in data you have synthesized.

Do you out things together?

Do you have a problem?

I am not sure if Einstein said this. Even if he didn’t, it’s still a pretty good quote.

“Stay away from negative people, they have a problem for every solution.” – Albert Einstein.

What solution do you bring?

Who does that?

To make your product or service differentiated, try to get the response “who does that?” When you get that response, you know you truly stand out.

Why would anyone do that?

Does it still work?

I once heard a saying, “The harder you work, the luckier you get.” But such saying is not in vogue anymore even if it is true.

How small can you be?

No matter how small a business you want to run, there is still that “volume” question to deal with. The word “critical mass” that you find so vulgar. You need to have that number built into your business plan. You will have cost and you will need enough revenue to minus that cost that will eventually be your profit.

How may do you need?

Are you being commoditized?

Fighting the forces that commoditize your service industry will always be a big challenge. It could be from technology or from the lowering of prices. Thinking and initiatives will be two key differences you can use to defend against their encroachment.

How do you differentiate?

Are you competent?

Competence at work should include values like courtesy, compassion and being considerate. If you can’t work very well with people, then you aren’t very competent are you?

Where are your manners?

How much do you understand?

“Before I had studied Zen for thirty years, I saw mountains as mountains, and waters as waters. When I arrived at a more intimate knowledge, I came to the point where I saw that mountains are not mountains, and waters are not waters. But now that I have got its very substance I am at rest. For it's just that I see mountains once again as mountains, and waters once again as waters.”  - Alan Watts on the famous saying by Ching Yuan Wei Hsin.

I think for almost anything that we want to learn deeply, once you arrive at the satisfaction of knowing better what is going on, you see things as they are again.

What do you truly learn

What questions do you ask?

That’s something to think about today. Make mental notes to the questions you ask at meetings, at casual gatherings and questions that are in your thoughts. Noting the patterns in your questions will reveal the answer about you.

Are you ready for the answer?

What do you want to learn?

The digital space allows you to experiment a lot. Just taking advertising as an example, you can change things pretty easily and test things out. Which means you can learn pretty fast for a very low cost. But you have got to be willing to learn and poke.

How much do you know?

What do you love?

“What you need, above all else, is a love for your subject, whatever it is. You've got to be so deeply in love with your subject that when curve balls are thrown, when hurdles are put in place, you've got the energy to overcome them.” - Neil deGrasse Tyson

What can you overcome?

How do you succeed at work?

One way is to look at your personal unique talents that you have, that only you have in that combination. Then use those talents in your company to make things happen, even if it means working hard.

Why are you so nervous?

Marketing isn’t like a parachute jump; you don’t have to get it right the first time. In fact, it is like most skills. The more you do, the better you get.

What is failure?

Thursday, November 16, 2017

What did you research?

“What people say, what people do, and what they say they do are entirely different things.” – Margaret Mead.

Why would you believe the results?

Wednesday, November 15, 2017

Who is on your team?

A few thoughtful marketers can change the whole destiny of your company.

Who is selling?

Tuesday, November 14, 2017

Are you at peace?

The market will never be in perfect harmony with your business ambitions. You know it isn’t. It’s the reason why you have a job.

What is the price of harmony?

How much have you read?

Increasingly I tend to believe that it is not how much you read that matters. Sure the quantity of books is no trivia in an equation of knowledge. But how much you reflect, use and experiment upon what you read is equally as important.

Do you reflect?

How do you roll?

I was quite surprised to discover this quote from Isaac Asimov.

“It takes more than capital to swing business. You've got to have the A. I. D. degree to get by - Advertising, Initiative, and Dynamics.”  - Isaac Asimov

Do you have the initiative?

Thursday, November 9, 2017

Is it patent to you?

There is a time to be obvious; there is a time to be subtle. How you choose to communicate you choose to deploy depends on your category, how new you are in that category and what you are trying to say.

Will it be obvious to them?

Wednesday, November 8, 2017

Are you curious?

If marketers find joy in discovering new things that work rather than trying old things that worked, we would have a lot more interesting campaigns.

What should you poke?

Tuesday, November 7, 2017

Is there a solution?

In marketing, just like in life – challenges, crisis and perhaps even catastrophe is inevitable. But take solace that there will always be a solution

How do you think the big brands survived?
