What adds flavor to success?

Unexpected challenges may be a bitter experience but it is overcoming these challenges that make the success sweeter.
How does success taste like?

What do you know?

Have broad base knowledge so you are an interesting person to talk to and add value to discussions.
Be an expert in some subjects so you become the go-to person.
Who do you call?

What pulls you up in the morning?

Sometimes nothing. You hate it. You hate waking up for whatever reason. And that is OK. We all go through these cycles. Some days, you spring out of bed. On other days, for whatever whimsical reasons, you just don’t feel like it.
It has absolutely nothing to do with the person you married, the job you have and the car you drive or your morning commute. It’s just one of those days.

There is no need to do soul searching about your passion, your adventure for work and those sexy romantic phrases that make you feel guilty about not wanting to face the world that morning. Well, it’s one of those days. Some of us have more of it than the others. That’s OK. Really, there is nothing wrong with your life.

What’s good with your life?

Are you getting enough sleep?

Don’t worry about getting fit if you aren’t even healthy. Start with eating a healthier diet, sleep enough, then do some regular walking. It impacts your work, it impacts the way you treat people.
Your irritability and stress isn’t caused by your co-workers.
It’s caused by your lack of sleep.
Do the world a favour. Get some sleep.

Are you fit to work?

When did you do it?

I have done this before!
No doubt, in the right context that experience will surely help. It will help more if you have a dash of doubt. That dash makes you collect a little more information that will help strengthen your experience.  When did you do it? Who did you do it with? What made you succeed then? How did you implement it? Why would it be different now?
Surely, you would want to do better rather than replicate the same success.
How can you do it better?

Do they want to know?

They probably do. But they don’t know what they don’t know.
In that case it’s tough getting them to know. Give yourself a timeline. If you still aren’t getting anywhere, let it go.
Let some educator types do their thing.
What if they don’t want to know?

Are you lazy?

Some people like to hide their laziness to write a plan, to adhere to principles, to understand the intricacies of the business and to work around them behind the excuse of “thinking out of the box”, to be “unconventional”.
Even if you want to “think out of the box”, to be “unconventional”, to “challenge the conventions”, you need to understand the underlying principles. Unless, you can state those clearly and know which one you want to challenge, you are going to fail. Unless, you understand the principles thoroughly you won’t know which ones to exploit. Before you master all the principles within it, how would you know which can’t be compromised and which can be challenged?
That in essence is taking calculated risk.
If you did not make an effort to do your homework and then to master those intricacies, but execute anyway, it’s just at best an audacious move.
Did you do your homework?

Are you shy to change?

It’s difficult to change. It’s very difficult to change for the better. You know, to be more patient, calmer, cutting out the drama, less angry. So, when you do change for the better, ignore the noise that says you have changed. That noise can come from within and often times it comes from friends. Ignore them.
Some people are in love with the idea of an unchanging self. They think “staying true” to who you are means you are “real”. The fact that you changed, means you have “sold out”. If that means selling out for a better self, why not?
Who should you be loyal to?

Are you overspending?

Those who worry about overspending on advertising are usually those who don’t spend enough or don’t have enough budgets to spend on advertising to worry about overspending.

So, if you have to ask that question. Don’t worry about it.
Are you underspending?

Are you in doubt?

When in doubt, do it anyway.
When in doubt, don’t do it.
There isn’t exactly a correct answer. Either way, you learn. You make adjustments and you take risk again. There is always a way out, you are just trained to think that mistakes are costly.
You will get better if you learn the lessons.
What are you anxious about?

Do you love the idea?

You can’t love the idea of a marketing plan (or a communications plan for that matter), but hate the effort of investing and implementing the plan.

Do you hate the effort?

Who should you educate?

Whether you see what’s right in a wrong way or what’s wrong in the right way, you create confusion and argument.
The only way is to be open and take personal responsibility to educate yourself on the topic at hand. It’s difficult. But it is only right.
Who can help you?

How can you work better with others?

Understand yourself. That’s probably a more important aspect than understanding the people you work with
Can others work better with you?

Can you just ignore it?

Overcoming a bad habit or a weakness takes conscious effort. You can’t leave it there and ignore it. You can’t say, I will accentuate my strengths and let it carry me forward. Some people believe that. I believe eventually your weakness will be exploited. You will meet with situations where you wish those weaknesses didn’t exist.
It’s true at a personal level as well as on a corporate level.
Does it improve on its own?

When is the best time?

I think the quote goes something like this, “The best time to plant a tree was ten years ago, the next best time is now.”

I suppose it works for the bad habit you want to change and that marketing plan you wanted to execute as well.

Are you planting a tree?

So, is it small steps or big steps?

It’s not small steps or big steps that matter. What matters is that it is consistent steps. Since consistent big steps tire you out easily, consistent small steps may actually work better.

Regardless, keep moving towards the objective you set.

Rain or shine.

Do you get to stop?

Can you stop judging?

You probably can’t. But you can start. Stop judging people. One person at a time and learn to trust the process.

It may not change the world. But it can change your life for the better one non-judgmental action at a time.

Can you trust?

Do you want to make a difference?

Remember these words - hard work, grit, resilience, seemingly insurmountable challenges, blood, sweat, tears, betrayal (real or perceived), and loneliness – for a start.

Would you like to compromise?

Can you see from another perspective?

One way is by making it a habit to meet people from different circles. People who will give you a contrarian view.

Otherwise, no matter how hard you try you will still be seeing things from your lenses. Our minds have a way of proving whatever we believe.

Who can you meet today?

Can you change the world?

You can. You, of course know that already.
Have conversations on causes you care about and lead them into action. A friend at a time. Don’t just complain incessantly. You are better off using that energy to find a solution to the very things you hate.
Can you change yourself?
