Can a leopard change its spots without becoming a zebra?

Brands are told to be consistent.

Same colours. Same tone. Same promise. Same look.

Fair enough.

But consistency does not mean freezing yourself in time. A person can grow older without becoming someone else. A restaurant can change its menu without forgetting what made people love it. A brand can evolve its expression while keeping its principles intact.

The problem begins when consistency is confused with preservation.

Then every change feels like betrayal.

Strong brands know what must remain and what is allowed to move.

Perhaps identity is not about looking exactly the same.

It is about being recognisable even after you have changed.

What stays?

Will today's solution become tomorrow's problem?

a blue question mark on a pink background

We like solutions because they create endings.

Problem identified.

Solution approved.

Done.

Except solutions have consequences too.

The promotion that lifts sales changes future price expectations. The extra staff added to solve workload creates a larger organisation to manage. The process introduced to prevent one mistake becomes bureaucracy five years later.

This does not mean we should become paralysed and worry endlessly about every possible consequence.

It means good decisions deserve one more question after, "Will this work?"

Ask, "What happens if it does?"

Because sometimes success creates the next problem more efficiently than failure ever could.

Perhaps there are no permanent solutions.

Only better problems.

Then what?
