Did you win the first fight?

One of the biggest unnoticed fights of the day for most people is hitting the snooze button. It’s the ultimate test of your will versus your excuses. If your will can win that fight, your will can win most fights with the excuses that is lined up throughout the day.

What’s your excuse?

How much can you muster?

Tough. Not impossible.
Painful. Not incapacitated.
Tired. Not lifeless.

Don’t confuse what your perception tells you versus what is reality. How you view your circumstance is how you overcome your challenges.

How painful can it be?

You may not have a choice when it comes to painful endings. But you will always have a choice in focusing on pleasurable beginnings

How dark can it get?

Very often we forget, the darkest hour is the time we need to be at our brightest.
Here is a good reminder.

Every SEAL knows that under the keel, at the darkest moment of the mission, is the time when you must be calm, composed — when all your tactical skills, your physical power and all your inner strength must be brought to bear.
If you want to change the world, you must be your very best in the darkest moment.”

-       Naval Adm. William H. McRaven, ninth commander of U.S. Special Operations Command commencement speech 2014 at University of Texas, Austin.

If you want to change your toughest circumstances, you need to be at your very best too in your darkest moments.

How valuable is your opinion?

Just because you were a student for 16 years of your life doesn’t make you a teacher. Just because you have been a patient doesn’t make you a doctor. Most people tend to think that just because they are involved in some ways in a certain industry; that gives them the right to voice their opinions at meetings where subject matter experts speak and be accorded the same respect.

Granted, everyone has a right to voice their opinions but remember not all opinions carry the same value. Even more important, not every meeting is suitable for an amateur to voice their opinions.

What do you add to the equation?

How much control do you have?

To have the freedom of time to pursue your most wanted goals means you need to resist the time robbers on a daily basis. To have the freedom to do what you like, means being able to discipline yourself to do what you don’t like but necessary so you can move on to what you like. The freedom you want comes from the control you have. Mainly, your self-control.

Is it easy?

If it is easy then anybody can do it. If anybody can do it, then you wouldn’t be paid more to do the job. Someone cheaply paid will be asked to do it. If you are paid to do it, then get it done. Stop complaining that it is tough

Where are the gaps?

Asks yourself – “what else did you miss?” That’s how you fill the gaps. Then look for the best subject matter expert you have access to and ask “what else did you miss?”

Don’t assume just because you spent a tremendous amount of time on it means you have got it covered. Time doesn’t equate expertise.

Do you know what to look for?

How do you change?

There are people who travel, read and experience everything with the same stubborn worldview that nothing ever changes them for the better.

You can’t think differently if you still see everything with the same old lenses. You can see different things, read different books, experience different events. But if you don’t read them differently, see them differently and experience them differently, then nothing is going to make a difference.

Are you working?

You aren’t overwhelmed with work. You are overwhelmed with stuff - some personal, some trivia. Mostly, unrelated to work. Stop playing and start working.

Are you observing yourself?

What if you are wrong?

‘My painful mistakes shifted me from having a perspective of “I know I am right” to having one of “How do I know I am right?” – Ray Dalio

What do you know?

It is OK to be ignorant. But it is not ok to be aware of your ignorance, be proud of it and do nothing. It will only make you a fool.

Accept your ignorance. You can’t be an expert in everything. But use that awareness to propel your curiosity. That’s how you progress.

How smart do you think you are?

“The first principle is that you must not fool yourself, and you are the easiest person to fool.” – Richard Feynman.
