How would you do it?

How you do things depends on how you view the world. See the world as a place of abundance, you move forward courageously and with generosity. View it with the lens of scarcity, you will always be watching your back and holding back.

One is immensely easier though the masses usually use the other.

Which would you choose?

Do you want help?

If you do, allow people to ask you questions. They let people who are willing to help you and can help you help you better. Questions are the keys to open the door of your challenges. Without them there are no good answers.

They are here to help. They aren’t being difficult.

Do you have the answers?

Have you changed?

“A corporation is a living organism; it has to continue to shed its skin. Methods have to change. Focus has to change. Values have to change. The sum total of those changes is transformation.”  – Andy Grove.

Of course you know this. But your methods, focus and values remain the same

Can you transform?

What’s the expiry date?

Don’t let small things irritate you the whole day. Or week, month, year. Sure, it is simple but not easy. But it can be done through mindfulness and constant practice.

Client rejected the quotation? Don’t let it spoil the good lunch you will have with your favourite colleague.

Your angtsy teen giving you the cold shoulder? Don’t let it chill the favorite curry your mom cooked for you.

Everything has an expiry date. These small things (and in hindsight everything will be a small thing), let them expire quickly. The past shouldn’t spoil the future.

What did you forget?

Whatever you measure, don’t forget reach. If you don’t reach enough people, you won’t have mass. No mass, no volume, no profit. Yes, even if you are a niche, boutique, customize, whatever you call it business. You will still need “critical mass” to breakeven, to make a profit, to make it worthwhile – whichever is your objective. You better know that "critical mass" figure.

How many people know?

When should it be better?

The digital age has trained a generation of executives fixated on fixing things before they have a chance to run its course. With hourly reports being possible, every little hump on the campaign journey is responded by a jerk.

Relax. Let the campaign run. Let those humps and dips create a pattern. Patterns take time. Give it time before you do anything. Try it then fix it.

What will make you do it?

You don’t need inspiration. You need desperation. It’s one of the most powerful force in the world to get things done.

Are you still waiting?

What changed?

The tools, the process, the people and the culture can change. All can change together, some will affect another.

But there will also be times, when one change does not affect another. For example, changing a tool may not affect the process, the people and the culture at all. Being able to say clearly what you want changed is important.

What really changed?

Are you inspired?

You are a mere mortal pulled in ten directions, orbiting on multiple axes. Not every action should be an inspired one, not every action can be a motivated one. That will demand too much on your energy that is already in short supply.

Sometimes, just acting is enough, keeping momentum when the going gets tough is just as important as motivated motion.

Are you always motivated?

Where did the cost come from?

Some people are very na├»ve. They like small budget ideas that give big impact. They forget, such ideas need time and effort to cook up. That costs money.

The idea may be cheap to execute but the time to think it up costs a lot of money. Otherwise, someone would have written a book titled “999 Small Budget Ideas for Big Impact” and sold it to you for RM9.90.

How much do you have?

How do you let them do it?

To empower your people, start by shutting up. Let them talk in meetings. You, the boss? Shut up.

When they feel safe to talk, they will feel safe to act.
Otherwise all these empowerment talk is weak.

Are you shutting up?

How’s your logic?

Just because your competitor’s higher priced products are selling like hotcakes, doesn’t mean your lower priced products competing with theirs will sell better. You would think I am stating the obvious.

But you see people launching cheaper priced options everyday to compete with a market leader that is selling like hotcakes at a higher price.

You think it is that obvious?

What’s your strategy?

Many people say, “Hope is not a strategy.” That’s true to a certain extent. But you can argue that if your hope is based on a well planned execution, then perhaps it is not that hopeless.

Recently, I heard someone say, “I am always in luck. When I do this, my competitors always seem to do this.” I am paraphrasing that person, of course.

Now, luck is not a strategy. I would like to hear arguments that it is.

Is there hope?

How is it working?

If you have not been very effective in your work lately, look out for the noises around you. If none of the projects your company is managing is moving forward as planned, look out for the noises around it. Watch out for the internal and external noises.

Once you understand what the true distractions are, work will start working.

How quiet has it been?

Where does your strength come from?

It can pinpoint it to whatever. Even for your patented whatever. Eventually it leads back to people.

How are you treating them?

What can marketing do?

Not all of us can dance. But all of us have an audience that would like to see us dance.

That’s part of what marketing does.

Who’s your audience?

Do you lead?

First, tell them the cause. What are you fighting for?
Then tell them the course. What route would you take to get there?

Are they following?

What do you want to be good at?

A language. Speak and write it every day.
A healthy body. Sleep well, eat well, work out well, every day.
A skill. Practice it every day.
A strong brand. Think, feel, do branding every day.
Do what is important. If it is important, pay attention to it every day. What you give your time to, grows.

Why do you think you are weak?

What does your knowledge lead you to believe?

“Eppur si muove” meaning ‘And yet it moves’ has always been attributed to the Italian mathematician, physicist and philosopher Galileo Galilei (1564–1642). It was said he spoke these words after he was forced to recant his claims that the Earth circled a Sun that didn't move. The statement implies “It’s doesn’t matter what you believe, these are the facts.”

Sometimes, presenting facts at marketing meetings is like being persecuted during the Inquisition. You have the facts, but the people listening to it have a different set of beliefs. Those set of beliefs may not be fact based. Regardless, you are guilty.

Today, we know Galileo was right. Some marketers should walk towards enlightenment.

I say again, “Eppur si muove.”

Are you imposing the dark ages in yourselves?

Where should you start?

This is a oft repeated theme here because it needs to be.

Marketers often start at the wrong place and hence end up lost.

Start with your objective. Then ask, what is the best way to achieve that objective given the resources that we have.

So list all the ways and ideas you have, then do a advantages and disadvantages list of each idea. Yes, it is not rocket science. Yes, it is not sexy at all because there is no sexy name to this process. But this works.
