Who would you pay?

I would pay an old school practitioner. Stoic in her outlook. Trained on a set of principles. Not easily swayed by the next simmering shiny widget. Those are often test driven against her set of principles. Skeptical but always inquiring. Willing to impart, in equal part willing to learn. Proud of her achievements. Even prouder of her failures. She wants my money but doesn’t need it.

How much attention did they pay you?

What’s love got to do with it?

I don’t love to scrub the bathroom. I don’t love to clean up the kitchen after cooking. I dislike doing the dishes when everyone is in the TV room. I loathe taking out the trash when I'd rather be cosying up with a book. I'd rather write than review office work on a weekend.

I didn’t love any of the above during the lockdown. I didn’t love the above during a lockdown doing it every day. But what I love is not what matters most.

This lesson works even outside of a lockdown

Is it going according to plan?

If you aren’t thrown into a disarray, things will move according to plan. You will achieve your goals. It will meet your expectations.

Now that things are in a disarray, you need to throw all your creativity at the problem. You create new solutions. You push your boundaries. You test your mettle. When you do that, you tend to exceed your expectations.

There is something to like about being thrown off-track.

Are you on the right track?

Don’t you want to know?

You have the answer to what you need to do next. In fact, you have so many answers to every question that you have. But the answers amount to nothing because you never executed them. You lack faith in them. You don’t trust yourself. Mainly because you the uncertainties beyond the answers unnerve you. You are more comfortable seeking more answers.

Get uncomfortable. Take action on the answer that you have. That answer may not be the final one but tat’s OK. It will open up the door to the real answer

What intimidates can liberate if you allow it.

Who can emancipate you?

What is your yang?

When you overuse your strengths, they begin to become your weakness. It’s the theory of yin and yang. If you are disciplined and formulaic in your approach to life and it has brought you some form of success; overplaying it eventually becomes your weakness.

You need to consciously go against this strength even though it has served you well. Just to give it a little balance before nature forces the balance on you.

Do you think they can?

The praise you secretly covet from those friends will never come. Don’t hope for it anymore. Walk on. For one, they are probably higher on the pecking order of friendship. Or they perceive themselves to be higher on that pecking order. Two, they are jealous about your achievements. They can’t do and won’t do what you did to get where you are now.

Complimenting you makes them face their ghosts.

Be a good friend. Understand that bit.

What did you really expect them to do?

What is coming out from your mouth?

Every one has a hurt somewhere. Every one is hurting. We all have our stories. Yes, even your heroes are hurting.

Whenever there is a chance – say good things. When there is a chance, write the compliment letter, comment positively on social media just as fast as you would write that criticism and complain.

Learn to give a compliment and praise as fast as you would a criticism and complain. The moment you do that, see how compliments and praise starts flooding your way.

Ever wondered why you don’t get compliments?

How do you get good ideas?

Give birth to tonnes of bad ideas. That’s how you get to good ideas. The reason you do not have enough good ideas is because your brain stops you from embarrassing yourself with bad ideas.

To pan for gold, you need to get through the mud first. Throw all your muddled thoughts out there on a piece of paper. Yes, it has to be written. Think of the paper like your gold pan. When all is written, the golden ideas will sparkle at you amongst the mud.

Did you get enough mud?

How do you stand out?

Companies are so prone to doing the bare minimal that it doesn’t take a lot to stand out. The bar has been set so low. All you have to do is care. Take initiative. Notice the details. Give a damn about things.

In a world where no one cares, people cut budgets just to get by with bare minimal, a little attention will get you very far.

This works for people and companies as well. Small actions make a big difference.

What distinguishes you from the rest?

How much time do you need?

You need less time than you need to do most things. The more time you use, the easier to give up. Put some speed to it. See how your excitement triples. The confines of time put fuel on velocity. Velocity speeds up opportunities

When do you think you will give up?

What are you good at?

If you are good at what you do, make it great. Do it so well that you are the best at it. Great companies don’t ‘pivot’ all the time. They pursue what they are great at with a dogged passion. Small people panic all the time. They pivot because that’s the sexy thing to do. Pivot too often you will spin out of control.

When will you see results?

Between what you do consistently and when the results will show is going to take a long time. If you keep focussing on the results, you will be disappointed. That seed you planted won’t become a tree in a year. It will take years. Even longer to bear fruit. But if you trust the process, the do what you do consistently. Measure your consistent action. Did you do it? If you did, be happy with it. Trust that the fruits will bear when the time comes.

Do you trust the process?

Will you apply?

Knowledge without application is just information. Information is cheap. It’s just a click away. Application is priceless. It makes you valuable, it makes you better, it makes you contribute your own experience to the world to make it better when you share it with us.

Pick a few things you learned. Apply it. Learn from it. Make it better. Make it yours. Then teach us.

Will you teach us what your learned?

How do you want to proceed?

Do nothing. You can. You leave someone to decide your fate for you.
Do something. You can, as well. You determine your own fate to the best of your ability.

The worries, stress and anxieties are evenly distributed for both.

Complaining, whining and kicking up a fuss falls into the first choice.
Make your choice.

Do you want to have a chance to succeed?

How should you start?

Start where you should start, with some basics and some assumptions. Then be ready to ship it out. Perhaps, your first prototype may even suck, but that is fine. The important thing right now is to get it out. You want momentum. The adage fire, ready, aim is applicable here. Launch it, get the feedback, then quickly fix and relaunch a newer better version. That’s one way to stay ahead of the curve.

Can you afford to wait?

Where are your eggs?

You have heard of not putting all your eggs in one basket. You even believed it. But when it came to certain things you just didn’t practice it. Well, it’s never too late. Let this be a wake-up call. Start now, because another crisis will creep up on you. It is not an “if”, it is a “when”. Start now.

How many baskets do you have?

Do you want to learn?

No, truly learn. Not just say it but don’t mean it. Most people say they want to learn but what they truly want to do is impress you with what they know. Or because it is politically correct to say so, “I like to learn”, “I am open to learning.”

If you truly want to learn, first learn to shut-up, tame your ego and admit that there are answers beyond those that you offer. So, listen, be open-mined and know that your way may not be the only way. In other words, be modest and respectful.

Do you want to be better?
