What happens when nobody wants to be the idiot?

Ten people sit in a meeting.

Nine don't understand the chart.

Nobody asks.

Why?

Because each of the nine assumes the other eight probably understand it. So, everyone nods thoughtfully while secretly hoping nobody asks them to explain page 37.

This happens more often than we admit.

Complex language survives because people are embarrassed to request simple explanations. Bad ideas survive because nobody wants to ask the obvious question. Entire projects can proceed because everyone assumes someone else must know why.

There is enormous value in the person willing to say, "Sorry, I don't understand."

The idiot in the room may be the only intelligent one.

What question is everyone hoping someone else will ask?
