When does being easy to work with become a problem?

grey and black illustration

Being easy to work with is a compliment.

Responsive. Flexible. Helpful. Accommodating.

All good qualities.

Until accommodation becomes the expectation.

One extra revision becomes five. A favour becomes standard practice. The deadline that was impossible somehow becomes possible every time someone asks nicely enough.

Eventually you are no longer easy to work with.

You are easy to impose upon.

Good relationships need generosity.

They also need edges.

Boundaries don't always damage relationships. Sometimes they are what allow relationships to remain good.

Where's the line?

Who pays for your convenience?

man holding smartphone looking at productivity wall decor

Convenience rarely disappears friction.

It moves it.

The customer gets same-day delivery because someone reorganised a warehouse, a driver rushed across town or a retailer absorbed extra cost.

The manager gets a beautifully simple dashboard because someone spent three days cleaning the data behind it.

You get to say, "Just handle it," because someone else now has to figure out what "it" means.

This isn't an argument against convenience.

Convenience is valuable.

But whenever something becomes wonderfully easy at one end, it is worth looking at the other.

Efficiency can sometimes be friction exported to someone less visible.

Where did it go?

What happens when everyone competes on the same thing?

A large group of purple and yellow bullet caps

One bank says it understands you.

So does the next one.

Every telco has great coverage.

Every property developer builds lifestyles.

Every food brand has quality ingredients.

Every consultant is strategic.

After a while, differentiation becomes a chorus where everyone is singing roughly the same song.

The strange thing is that companies can spend years refining claims consumers stopped distinguishing long ago.

Perhaps the question is not how to say the same thing better.

Perhaps it is whether the thing is worth saying at all.

Still different?

How expensive is free?

A black payment terminal with a long white paper receipt on orange background

Free is one of marketing's favourite words.

Free trial. Free consultation. Free delivery. Free upgrade. Free gift.

And yes, free works.

The interesting question is what happens afterwards.

Free attracts people who value the offer. It can also attract people who value only the fact that it is free. Free can introduce a product beautifully or quietly teach people that the product should  not cost anything.

Someone always pays.

Sometimes the company.

Sometimes the customer later.

Sometimes the brand.

Price communicates value even when the price is zero.

Who's paying?

When does more choice sell less?

background pattern

Choice feels generous.

Three packages become five. Five flavours become twelve. Basic, silver, gold, platinum, platinum plus and something called elite.

More choice must mean more chances to find the perfect fit.

Except choosing has a cost.

Every option creates another comparison. Every comparison requires thought. Eventually the customer who came ready to buy starts wondering whether they understand enough to decide.

Businesses see assortment.

Customers may see homework.

There is a point where more stops feeling helpful.

Enough yet?

What happens after the rebrand?

Two blurred people standing before a wall covered in small printed images and logos

 The new logo goes up.

The website changes.

There is a launch video with stirring music and perhaps a sentence about a bold new chapter.

 Everyone claps.

Then Monday arrives.

The receptionist still answers the same way. The product arrives late. The sales team still tells a different story from marketing. The invoice remains impossible to understand.

A rebrand can change what people see.

It cannot, by itself, change what people experience.

Sometimes companies spend enormous energy changing the wrapper because changing the inside is considerably harder.

The strongest rebrands are not announcements.

They are evidence.

What actually changed?

What are you training your customers to expect?

woman using gray binoculars

Every action teaches.

Reply instantly enough times and instant becomes normal. Offer free delivery often enough and paying for delivery feels unreasonable. Discount every month and full price starts to look like bad timing.

Customers are observant students.

The difficulty is that businesses often look only at the immediate response. Sales went up. Engagement improved. Complaints dropped.

Good.

But behaviour has also been trained.

Marketing does not merely generate response. It creates expectation.

And expectations are much harder to reset than campaigns.

What did they learn?

What problem does success create next?

person playing magic cube

A small company wants more customers.

It gets them.

Wonderful.

Now customer service struggles.

So it hires more people.

Now communication becomes harder.

Managers are added.

Meetings multiply.

Systems are introduced.

Suddenly the founder who wanted more customers is attending a meeting about the format of meetings.

Every solution changes the environment in which the next problem appears.

Success does this particularly well. More sales create capacity problems. More employees create culture problems. More products create complexity. More recognition creates expectations.

This is not an argument against growth.

It is an argument against believing there is a destination where the problems finally stop.

Perhaps progress is simply earning the privilege of solving better problems.

When does efficiency become fragile?

white and green wooden frame

Imagine running a restaurant with exactly enough ingredients for an average Tuesday.

No waste.

Exactly enough staff.

No idle capacity.

Every table occupied at precisely the right time.

Beautiful spreadsheet.

Then a bus containing forty hungry tourists stops outside.

Efficiency often removes slack because slack looks wasteful. Spare inventory costs money. Extra capacity looks underutilised. Additional people reduce productivity ratios.

Until something goes wrong.

The world has an irritating habit of refusing to behave according to averages.

A little spare capacity can look inefficient on quiet days and extremely intelligent on difficult ones.

Perhaps resilience always carries some apparent waste.

How tight is too tight?

What does saying yes make impossible?

yes text on brown sand

Yes sounds positive.

Yes to the project. Yes to the meeting. Yes to the new customer. Yes to helping someone. Yes to another opportunity.

No sounds negative.

Perhaps we have the definitions backwards.

Every yes spends something finite. An hour committed here cannot be committed there. Money invested in one initiative cannot fund another. Attention placed on five priorities is not five times the attention.

This is why strategy is difficult.

The problem is rarely finding things worth doing. There are always plenty.

The problem is choosing which worthy things you will not do.

A calendar filled with yes eventually becomes a very long list of invisible noes.

What did you just refuse?

What does convenience make invisible?

black and white polka dot pattern

Years ago, getting somewhere unfamiliar required a map, road signs and perhaps stopping to ask someone for directions.

Now, you follow a blue line on your phone.

Much better.

But something else happened. We became very good at arriving and increasingly bad at knowing where we are.

Convenience does this.

Online shopping removes the journey to the shop. Food delivery removes waiting. Self-checkout removes a person. Algorithms remove the need to search.

Most of this is progress. I certainly don't want to unfold a giant road map at a traffic light again.

But every convenience removes some friction and occasionally something valuable disappears with it. Knowledge. Discovery. Conversation. Awareness.

The question isn't whether convenience is good.

It is what else leaves when the inconvenience goes.

What disappeared?

What happens after the shortcut?

Shortcuts are seductive because the benefit arrives immediately.

Skip a step. Save some money. Avoid the difficult conversation. Use the cheaper material. Put something out before it is ready.

For a while, everything looks fine.

The consequences of shortcuts usually arrive later, when the person who made the decision has already enjoyed the savings. The product fails six months later. The unresolved disagreement returns angrier. The customer discovers what you hoped they wouldn't notice.

Not every shortcut is bad. Experience teaches us which corners genuinely don't need walking around.

But there is a difference between removing unnecessary work and avoiding necessary work.

One creates efficiency.

The other creates debt.

What deserves another look?

person using magnifying glass enlarging the appearance of his nose and sunglasses

First impressions are efficient.

We meet someone and decide what sort of person they are. We see an idea and quickly judge whether it will work. We try something once, dislike it and move on.

Experience makes this faster. Sometimes that is wisdom.

Sometimes it is merely speed.

The older and more experienced we become, the greater the danger that pattern recognition turns into premature certainty. We have seen something similar before, therefore we assume we already know how this ends.

But people change.

Markets change.

Ideas improve.

And occasionally we were simply wrong the first time.

Good judgment is not only knowing what to dismiss.

It is knowing what deserves to be reconsidered.

What might deserve another look?

Who are you when nobody needs you?

person in black long sleeve shirt with white background

Being useful feels good.

Someone calls for advice.

A team needs a decision.
A client needs help.
A family member needs something fixed.

There is satisfaction in being the person who can solve the problem.

Over time, usefulness can quietly become identity.

Then comes the dangerous question.

What happens when nobody needs anything?

If your sense of worth depends entirely on being useful, rest can feel uncomfortable. Silence can feel empty. Other people's independence can even feel like rejection.

Perhaps usefulness is something we offer.

Not something we have to be.

What remains when there is nothing for you to solve?

What have you become too good at?

person skydiving on air during daytime

What have you become too good at?

Being good at something is generally considered an advantage.

People trust you with it. They call you for it. You become faster, sharper and more confident.

Then something strange happens.

Because you are good at it, you keep doing it.

Because you keep doing it, you become even better.

Eventually the thing that made you valuable can also become the thing that keeps you from learning anything new.

Competence has its own gravity. It pulls you back toward familiar work.

Sometimes growth requires being willing to look stupid again.

What are you excellent at that may be preventing you from becoming good at something else?

How much of your life happened accidentally?

person holding black and green compass pointing to west

We like neat stories.

I chose this career because...

I started this business because...

I met this person because...

Looking backwards, events arrange themselves beautifully. Cause leads to effect. Decisions appear deliberate. The story makes sense.

Living through it was probably messier.

A phone call came at the right time. Someone introduced you to someone. You took a job because you needed the money. A project you nearly rejected became important ten years later.

Strategy matters. Planning matters.

But so does noticing when life puts something unexpected in front of you.

Serendipity is useless if you are too busy following the plan to recognise it.

What accident in your life are you now calling destiny?

What are you saving for later?

pink pig coin bank on brown wooden table

There is always something we save for later.

The good bottle of wine. The expensive notebook. The shirt we don’t want to wear too often. The idea we keep telling ourselves we will start when things are less busy.

Later is useful. It gives us permission to postpone without feeling like we have abandoned anything.

The danger is that later can become a cupboard where good intentions go to gather dust.

Some things improve with age.

Others simply expire.

What are you protecting so carefully that you may never actually enjoy it?

When is changing your mind a sign of strength?

man standing beside rock formation

We admire consistency.

Someone who has held the same position for twenty years is described as principled. Someone who changes position risks being called inconsistent.

But what if the evidence changed?

What if you learned something?

What if you were simply wrong?

There is a peculiar form of stubbornness that masquerades as conviction. It treats changing one's mind as weakness even when reality has moved on.

Principles should be difficult to change.

Opinions should earn no such privilege.

A mind that never changes may be strong.

Or it may simply be closed.

What belief are you still carrying because admitting otherwise would be inconvenient?

Why do people remember the feeling but forget the words?

Nine yellow toy heads with different facial expressions in a row on white

Try remembering a conversation from ten years ago.

The exact sentences are probably gone. But you may still remember whether you felt encouraged, embarrassed, respected or small.

Memory is strange that way.

Brands spend enormous effort perfecting words. Taglines, scripts, copy and claims. All important. But consumers also remember how difficult you were to deal with. How the staff treated them. Whether the product disappointed. Whether you solved the problem when something went wrong.

The words may disappear while the residue remains.

You don't always get to choose what people remember.

But you contribute to how remembering feels.

What are you leaving behind after the words disappear?

What happens when nobody wants to be the idiot?

Ten people sit in a meeting.

Nine don't understand the chart.

Nobody asks.

Why?

Because each of the nine assumes the other eight probably understand it. So, everyone nods thoughtfully while secretly hoping nobody asks them to explain page 37.

This happens more often than we admit.

Complex language survives because people are embarrassed to request simple explanations. Bad ideas survive because nobody wants to ask the obvious question. Entire projects can proceed because everyone assumes someone else must know why.

There is enormous value in the person willing to say, "Sorry, I don't understand."

The idiot in the room may be the only intelligent one.

What question is everyone hoping someone else will ask?
