Picking the right groups and network to be in is a skill. Business people need to be in networks not just to build relationships for business but to learn as well. I remember early in my entrepreneurial life I was recommended to join a certain business group. They are very nice people, but our ambitions just didn’t align. The size of businesses was just very different. I left after a few meetings. There is no way to know for certain, but if you attend some meetings and give it some time, over time you develop a knack of knowing which will fit you better. You want to be with like-minded people and also people slightly more successful (in whatever way you define success) than you so you can learn from them.
