Now at a tender-ish age of 40 some, I have the privilege to walk into meetings with talented youngsters from big name agencies. I know these sort of agencies well; you know those that have dead founder names on their door? I have more than a basic understanding of their inner workings. After all, I spent a good part of my career in that ecology.
Just a word
of advice from a naïve, low-life, struggling, hungry entrepreneur to these
young talented managers – the business card you carry and what it says about
you? It’s all an illusion, really.
It’s OK to
fake it till you make it. It buys you time. It buys you time to back up your
loud mouth counsel to the clients with cold hard facts, with real skills and
pragmatic experience. Please do not squander your youth away with what your business card
says. It’s only paper with a nice brand name on it.
Your own name
on that piece of card eventually needs to be backed up by the currency of real
work, good experience and perhaps if it is not too difficult to do – earnestness.
