What do you keep?

If you have been working in the same and parallel industry for at least 10 years, you should have collected a set of principles. Your own rule book so to speak. Great if you have written it down. Good if you have internalized it so much so that they are a checklist for you.

Managers who have been in the same industry for a long time and muddled in their thinking and decision making often do not have these. They collect all sort of experiences, do not see patterns, can’t isolate principles from these patterns, have too much inconsequential details; they drag every project down.

Isolate your principles, internalize them, write them down, evaluate them as you continue to gather experience and sharpen your expertise.

Do you have principles?
